The U.S. homeland security chief and some of her Western Hemisphere counterparts are urging the region's governments to bolster airline protections by making travel documents more secure.
The recommendation comes after a Wednesday meeting in Mexico City involving U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and security officials from seven other nations, including Canada and Mexico.
They say that passports should be strengthen with biometric technology that contains data on the legitimate holder and that more should be done to track lost or stolen passports.
They also pledge to improve systems for compiling information on passengers before flights are boarded.
