JetBlue Airways announced a sale Monday on winter fares to 55 destinations, from sunny to wintry, in a sign that airlines are struggling to fill their planes now that the holiday travel season is over.

JetBlue said it was offering fares as low as $39 on routes such as New York-Boston and San Francisco-Long Beach, Calif. It did not say how many seats per flight would be offered at that price, however, and it imposed blackout dates and other restrictions.

The New York-based carrier said the sale fares would be offered on its Web site through Jan. 13 for travel through March 24. The fares may require an advance purchase of up to 10 days, the airline said.
