A high school resource officer on Friday shot to death a 16-year-old student who attacked him with a knife, a school official told NBC News.

The male student at Carolina Forest High School had asked to speak with the resource officer in his office and a fight ensued, said Teal Britton, spokeswoman for Horry School District.

The student stabbed the officer with a knife, Britton said.

She said both struggled and to protect everyone's safety the officer opened fire. No one else witnessed the incident because it happened behind closed doors, Britton said.

Both were taken to the Conway Medical Center, where hospital officials confirmed the student's death. The school resource officer was listed in good condition.
