Many men do not realize they can get breast cancer. As a result, men are more likely than women to ignore symptoms, and to delay seeing a doctor.
In some cases, men do not seek medical care until the cancer has progressed and spread to other parts of the body. Duane Mittlesteadt was one of only about 1,300 male breast cancer cases diagnosed each year in the United States. Duane noticed his left nipple was inverted, which led him to see a doctor.
After removing Duane's breast, doctors treated him with chemotherapy and radiation. After taking the drug Tamoxifen for five years, Duane's doctor says Duane has a good chance the cancer will not reoccur. Signs of breast cancer include an inverted nipple, a lump in the breast, a change in the size of the breast or thickening in the breast tissue.
