Southern Union Company said Monday that Eric D. Herschmann has been appointed to its board of directors.

Herschmann, 45, who was also named vice chairman of the board, will serve a term that ends at the company's 2010 annual meeting. He continues to serve as president and chief operating officer of the Houston-based natural gas company.

Southern Union said that Stephen C. Beasley and Michael J. Egan also have resigned from its board of directors. Those resignations are part of an agreement with Sandell Asset Management Corp., whose affiliates own nearly 9 percent of Southern Union's outstanding shares.
