The first part of the University of New Mexico's Cancer Treatment and Clinical Research Facility opened its doors to outpatient services on Monday.
The $90 million facility is expected to serve more than 200,000 patients a year: "half of the adults and virtually all the children diagnosed with cancer in the state," according to a news release from the facility.
Docors, nurses and staff at the 206,000 square foot facility will take a holistic approach to cancer treatment, according to Dr. Rob Hromas.
"This Building is all about caring for the whole patient," he says. "Not just getting them the most cutting edge care, but also caring for them emotionally and spiritually."
The center features healing gardens, a reflecting pool, private alcoves and a meditation chapel.
The center's second phase will start in June of 2010.
