Nintendo Co Ltd has sold more than 15 million units of its "Wii Fit" system in just over a year, taking advantage of a growing interest in video game consoles for physical fitness enthusiasts.

At the E3 video game conference in Los Angles on Tuesday, the company also said it will introduce a new version of the home exercise game, called "Wii Fit Plus," later this year.

"In the 13 months since it was introduced, "Wii Fit" has been the best-selling game in America," Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, told reporters.

The "Wii Fit" game features a shoulder-width "balance board" that senses shifts in posture. It can be used to monitor weight and for a variety of games and exercises. "Wii Fit plus" will be more precise in its measurements.

Many software makers at the annual video game conference introduced fitness games or updates to popular exercise titles, including Electronic Arts Inc and France's Ubisoft Entertainment SA.

Nintendo has weathered the global recession relatively well, with its Wii game console outselling Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360 and Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 since its 2006 launch.
