The power company AmerenUE has suspended plans to build a second nuclear reactor at its central Missouri plant.
The utility made the announcement Thursday at parent Ameren Corp.'s St. Louis headquarters.
It comes a day after supporters of state legislation designed to help Ameren build the second reactor called it increasingly unlikely the bill would pass this year.
The legislation would have allowed utilities to charge customers the costs of a new power plant before it started producing electricity.
The new nuclear reactor at the Callaway plant near Fulton would have cost at least $6 billion.
AmerenUE CEO Thomas Voss says the company wasn't canceling plans outright but it was unlikely the project would be resurrected.
