Although Iceland is one of the nations that has taken a hard-hit by the downturn, the island is not going down without a fight. Iceland has landed itself on top of numerous “destinations to watch” lists, including our own Top 29 Places to Go in 2009. Leading the tourism charge has been Icelandair, which has just announced new year-round service between Seattle, Washington and the capital city of Reykjavik.
This new route will go into effect July 22, 2009, providing passengers with four flights a week (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) departing at 4:30 p.m. from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and arriving in Reykjavik at 6:45 a.m. Prices start from just $822 round-trip — an impressive rate for such a long-haul flight during the summer months.
In addition, the airline is partnering with Alaska Airlines to provide connections to Seattle from San Francisco, Las Vegas, Anchorage, Los Angeles and San Jose. Icelandair has also been busy with other changes to their 2009 schedule, and will be debuting flights to Stavanger, Norway and Dusseldorf, Germany this summer.
Customers flying Icelandair to European cities can also enjoy a free stopover in Iceland, for a little relaxation in the blue-lagoon hot spring before continuing their travels.period.
