Syria's state-run news agency says eight teenagers have been killed when a boat carrying dozens of students sank in a lake near Damascus.

SANA says the eight were teenage girls. It says those who survived Thursday's accident in Lake Zarzar swam ashore.

One local official says two adults, including the boat owner, were also killed. The official, Mohammed al-Kasm, says the boat, which was designed to carry 10 people, had 35 on board when it sank.

Lake Zarzar is just to the west of Damascus and is frequented by Syrians for picnics.
