A Delta Air Lines plane with 190 people on board has landed safely in New Orleans after striking birds shortly after takeoff.
A spokeswoman for Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport said Delta Flight 1053 returned to the tarmac Monday morning. The plane had been bound for Atlanta.
A Delta spokeswoman said there were 184 passengers and six crew members on board the Boeing 757 when it took off around 7:20 a.m. Birds hit the engine, and the captain decided to return to the airport as a precaution.
Passengers were rebooked on other flights.
In January, a US Airways plane that had taken off from LaGuardia Airport in New York had to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River when both of its engines were disabled by bird strikes shortly after takeoff.
