Police in southern Russia say four militants have been killed in the volatile province of Dagestan.
Provincial police spokesman Mark Tolchinsky said Wednesday the four were in a car and opened fire after police tried to pull them over.
He says police later found a gun, explosives and ammunition in the car.
Dagestan is at the center of a recent upsurge in violence linked to an Islamist insurgency in Russia's North Caucasus.
The predominantly Muslim province borders Chechnya, where Russian troops have fought two full-scale wars against separatist rebels in the past 15 years.
