Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry has returned to Howard University Hospital after complications from his recent kidney transplant.

Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry has returned to Howard University Hospital after a recent kidney transplant.

Barry spokeswoman Natalie Williams says he went for a routine post-surgery checkup Monday morning. Williams says doctors later called Barry back to the hospital and readmitted him.

She says doctors had discovered "a level of abnormality" in tests taken Monday, but she did not specify what complications Barry is suffering from. She says his condition is not considered serious.

The former mayor, who is a current D.C. Council member, received a transplanted kidney from a friend in February.

The transplant came as prosecutors were seeking to have Barry jailed for failing to file his 2007 federal and local tax returns.
