A 10-year-old girl in a Christmas parade has died after Texas police say she jumped off a float and was run over by a trailer.

A 10-year-old girl in a Christmas parade died Saturday after she jumped off a float and was run over by a trailer, Texas police said.

Beaumont police supervisor Monica Smith said the girl had been told to stop jumping on and off the float during the popular annual parade Saturday. Smith said the girl fell and hit her head before being struck.

The girl was taken to a hospital with severe head injuries and pronounced dead.

Authorities said the accident happened toward the end of the parade.

Earlier this week, 10 members of a Cub Scout troop were injured in a Christmas parade in Overton when they were struck by a pickup truck. The 82-year-old driver was charged with reckless driving.
