The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians and The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board issued the following statement today on the passing of Oscar Lathlin, Manitoba Minister of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs:

"It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of The Honourable Oscar Lathlin, a dedicated individual and exemplary politician. It is truly a loss to the people of Manitoba. Mr. Lathlin dedicated his working life to creating a better future for Aboriginal people in Manitoba and was a champion of Manitoba Treaty Land Entitlement, economic development and northern issues in the province. He was a true visionary both politically and in his community. He had an excellent working relationship with the Federal government and we considered him a valued partner. We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Lathlin's family, friends and the Opaskwayak Cree Nation."

Mr. Lathlin was born and raised at Opaskwayak Cree Nation in The Pas in Northern Manitoba. Complimenting his Provincial political career, he served as a Board Member of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and served on various committees of the Assembly of First Nations. He also served as Chief of his community and as Executive Director of Swampy Cree Tribal Council.
