A woman caught in the middle of a shootout in the rough border city of Tijuana crashed her car while trying to flee, and her toddler was killed, officials said.
Authorities in the state prosecutor's office said the shootout began late Wednesday as state police tried to stop three armed men driving through the city. The men then opened fire on police.
The woman, caught in the crossfire, was trying to escape the bullets when her sport utility vehicle hit another car.
Witnesses said the baby appeared to have died of injuries sustained in the accident because the 1-year-old had no signs of bullet wounds. But an autopsy was being conducted Thursday.
Two men were taken into custody after the shooting, and one officer was wounded.
Tijuana has seen nearly nightly killings recently as Mexico is swept up in a wave of drug-related killings. Officials blame the violence on cartels fighting over lucrative smuggling routes.
Outside of Monterrey, a soldier and two unidentified men were found stabbed to death. At least 10 soldiers have been found dead in Nuevo Leon state in the past two weeks.
Officials said the bodies were found Wednesday dumped alongside a highway.
