Errors, walks haunt Skyhawks

May 8, 2008Herald Staff Report

Nerves, errors and walks conspired against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Wednesday.

The FLC softball team, playing in the NCAA Division II Regionals in San Angelo, Texas, dropped a 9-1 decision to host Angelo State on the opening day of the playoffs.

"We didn't play our game," Fort Lewis head coach Pam Adams said.

"It was nerves, I think," she said of the Skyhawks, who played in the national tournament for the very first time on Wednesday.

"Cary (Moone) was all over the place. I think she had seven walks," Adams said, describing her starting pitcher and the reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pitcher of the year.

Moone and the Skyhawks have up three runs in the first inning and three more in the second.

"We made two errors in the first two innings. And you can't make mistakes against a team that's that good," Adams said.

Meanwhile, Angelo State's All-American pitcher, Kari Galm, shut down the Fort Lewis bats - the Skyhawks managed only two hits in the game shorted to five innings by the eight-run rule.

Brooke Bails and Amber Massey had the only hits as FLC dropped to 28-25-1 on the season.

Angelo State had six hits and improved to 47-10.

The Rambelles scored three more runs in the fifth to end the game.

Galm improved her personal record to 31-2 this season.

"We just didn't take care of business," Adams said.

"But we get another chance (today).

"And we'll go at 'em."

The Skyhawks return to action in the double-elimination regional tournament today with a game at 12:30 p.m. MDT against Abilene Christian.

Abilene Christian lost to St. Edward's 3-1 in an earlier game on Wednesday.

In other first-round games Wednesday, Midwestern State beat St. Mary's 2-0 and Southeastern Oklahoma defeated Central Oklahoma 2-0.
