An English tourist died Tuesday after she became trapped between rocks in the middle of a New Zealand river while riverboarding, police said.
The sport involves riding boards to negotiate rapids.
The incident occurred when a group of tourists was boarding the Kawarau River Gorge on New Zealand's South Island with the Mad Dog River Boarding Company from the tourist resort city of Queenstown.
Sergeant Stephen Ereckson said the group was in the gorge near the town of Cromwell when the 21-year-old woman became submerged and trapped between rocks in the middle of the river.
Guides struggled for about 20 minutes to free her, then took her to the riverbank and immediately began CPR, Ereckson said.
Paramedics arrived quickly but were unable to revive her.
The river flow was normal and the incident would be investigated, Ereckson said.
He said the woman, whose hometown was not released, would be identified after her next of kin were notified.
