Work has started at Rome's main Leonardo da Vinci airport on 16 new gates for international flights aiming to accommodate 20 million more passengers a year.
Airport officials said Wednesday that the $300 million project is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
The Leonardo da Vinci airport currently serves around 33 million air travelers a year. Another city airport in Ciampino has seen flights by low-cost carriers increase in recent years.
