A fire destroyed a Baptist church building early Sunday morning, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

More than 70 firefighters battled the blaze at the Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church's sanctuary, where the congregation worships, said Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department spokesman Tom Francis. The fire was reported shortly before 5 a.m. and brought under control about an hour later, he said.

The sanctuary was destroyed, but its gymnasium was saved, he said. Church officials planned to hold Sunday services in the gymnasium.

Investigators were on the scene searching for a cause for the blaze, Francis said.
