An empty Hong Kong cable car crashed more than 50 meters (165 feet) to the ground, shaking confidence in one of the city's top tourist attractions.

Ngong Ping 360, a 5.7 kilometer (3.5 mile) cable car journey up to a giant bronze Buddha on Lantau island, has suffered a string of technical glitches and breakdowns, stranding suspended passengers for hours, since it opened last year.

Television footage showed the empty smashed cable car, lying overturned in shrubs with broken windows after dislodging from its cable on Monday night. No one was injured.

The accident took place during a test run after operating hours.

"It is unacceptable," said legislator Andrew Cheng who represents the transportation sector. "Cable cars should have a zero tolerance for accidents like this."

The government suspended the cable car service indefinitely.

Hong Kong's MTR Corp., which owns the service, said it viewed the accident with "grave seriousness".
