Doctors don't yet know exactly how widespread Elizabeth Edwards' returned cancer is.
They do know this much: it's been found in her right rib. And a suspicious spot in her lung is also being checked out.
Experts say once cancer returns to spread beyond the breast, it's no longer curable. But it can be held in check, sometimes for years.
The head of the breast cancer prevention program at the New York University Cancer Institute says it's "hopefully and very likely treatable." But Doctor Julia Smith also says "it will limit her life."
For now, John Edwards says his presidential campaign "goes on strongly."
He's been considered among the top-tier candidates although he trails front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in public opinion polls.
