A 5-year-old child was holding a shotgun when it accidentally fired and hit a 6-year-old boy, killing him, Oklahoma City police said Friday.

Donald Hastings was one of three children playing inside a sport utility vehicle March 8 when Donald was shot in the face at a northeast-side residence near Interstate 35, police said.

Investigators believe the children found the 410-gauge shotgun in the rear of the SUV and began playing with it, authorities said in a news release.

Police seized the vehicle and gun as part of a continuing investigation. Once completed, a report will be presented to the Oklahoma County District Attorney's office, which will determine whether any charges will be filed.
