Police say a California man has admitted faking his own kidnapping to keep his wife from finding out he crashed her new car.

Police in San Rafael say the 35-year-old told authorities two kidnappers held him up at gunpoint, so he decided to purposely crash the car into a wall to escape.

Under questioning he admitted making the whole story up. A police spokeswoman says the man was worried about how his wife would react to her car being wrecked.
