United Airlines has received final approval to launch new non-stop service between Washington, D.C., and Beijing, the Transportation Department said Thursday.

Transportation officials said in January they would award the service to United — a unit of UAL Corp. — following months of fierce competition that also involved AMR Corp. unit American Airlines, Northwest Airlines Corp. and Continental Airlines.

United can begin daily service between Washington Dulles International airport and Beijing in March.

The airline said it will fly Boeing Co. 747s on the route, which is expected to attract premium business customers.
