Texas prisons are running out of space, and officials are asking for as many as 5,000 more beds.
That means lawmakers have to find more room for violent offenders without spending a lot of tax dollars on new construction.
Some ideas include moving some inmates into drug treatment programs before they're paroled and returning fewer parolees to prison for minor infractions.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says that the population of Texas is growing, and that alone will create a need for more prison space.
