Two prep school students have been expelled for bringing a homemade bomb made of firecrackers, BBs and metal shavings to school.

A 14-year-old student at The Savannah Country Day School made the small bomb and gave it to another student Nov. 15, according to a police report.

The other student, also a 14-year-old boy, took the bomb home, but brought it back to school two days later at the urging of an administrator, according to the report.

School officials kept the bomb for nearly 24 hours before contacting police.

Headmaster Tom Bonnell said Tuesday that he should have called police immediately.

“In retrospect, I should have handled the situation differently,” Bonnell said in a letter to parents.

Bonnell said he was told initially the bomb had to be lit to explode.

“We now know by being shaken or moved it could have gone off,” he said. “It was certainly a dangerous situation, and we realize that.”

Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson said the device was not powerful enough to destroy the building, but could have harmed anyone within its proximity.
