While the investigation continues into the congressional page controversy, there's a strange political battle under way in Mark Foley's Florida congressional district.

Democrats hope their once-longshot candidate, Tim Mahoney, can claim victory in the now wide-open 16th Congressional District. Mahoney has the advantage of a campaign team that's been up and running for months.

The bigger burden is on Joe Negron, a Republican lawmaker who is scrambling to mount a challenge. He arrived at a campaign event this week carrying his own political signs and handing out stickers.

Foley resigned his position in the wake of a scandal involving him and electronic messages sent to underaged male pages on Capitol Hill.

Foley still on the ballot
Negron's name won't be on the ballot. Voters who want to cast G-O-P ballots will have to vote for Mark Foley.

Negron said at a debate last night that people in the district are "angered and betrayed" by Foley's conduct but voters now need to "focus on who is going to take his place." Mahoney says the race is "not about Mark Foley anymore."
