Twenty-five workers were trapped when a highway tunnel collapsed in southwestern China, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday.

A highway tunnel collapsed Monday in southwestern China, trapping 25 workers, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The collapse occurred on a highway linking the cities of Guangnan and Yanshan in Yunnan province, Xinhua said.

It said 26 workers were in the tunnel at the time but one managed to escape.

Rescuers said the trapped workers were “all alive and they should survive,” according to Xinhua.

The tunnel is more than 164 feet long, and food and drink have been sent to the workers through steel pipes, the news agency said.

The cause of the collapse was under investigation, Xinhua said, and the tunnel should be unblocked by Tuesday.
