A Somali lawmaker was fatally shot outside a mosque after Friday prayers, the latest blow to a virtually powerless administration that has been watching helplessly as Islamic militants take over much of the country.

Abdallah Isaaq Deerow, Somalia's minister for constitutional and federal affairs, was shot by an unidentified gunmen, who then escaped.

Deerow had been trying in recent days to build support for a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Gedi. He was not, however, among the 18 ministers who resigned Thursday, saying the government has failed to bring peace to this chaotic African nation.
