Hot temperatures in the eastern half of the country were falling Friday, while Tropical Storm Beryl brought rain to coastal Massachusetts.
Tropical storm warnings for Massachusetts were lifted, although moderate rain and gusty winds were expected to continue in Cape Cod.
Temperatures in the Northeast and the Northern Plains were likely to be in the 70s and 80s. Only a few areas in the Southeast were expected to hit 90 degrees after recent scorching heat.
Temperatures were on the rise in the West. California’s Central Valley was expected to surpass 100 degrees, and monsoon winds streaming humid air into the region were to make the heat worse.
The monsoon winds could also bring thunderstorms to Southern and Central California, along with the Central Valley and the Sierras. Storms were also likely in the Southwest, where flash flooding could occur, as well as the Central Plains.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Mount Wilson, Calif., to a high of 123 degrees at Bullhead City, Ariz.
