A 2-year-old girl was fatally mauled by a dog owned by an employee of an animal adoption service, authorities said.

Authorities believe Gemma Liliana Carlos wandered away from a caretaker's home Thursday morning.

She was reported missing, and her body was found near a doghouse by a deputy who shot and killed the dog to get to the child.

The Rottweiler's owner works for a nonprofit animal adoption service called Pet Guardian Angel.

"It's just very unfortunate, and he's very, very sorry it happened," said Martha Williams, head of the service.

The dog was vaccinated and was tied legally in an unfenced back yard, said Lorenzo Hinojos, animal control program manager.
