A man died after being trampled by a bull he was trying to put in a pen in his backyard, officials said.

Juan Gonzalez, 41, died at a hospital Wednesday from massive trauma, according to the San Bernardino County coroner’s office. He had been injured April 24.

“It happened very fast,” said Gonzalez’s friend, Martin Ramos. “After the incident, the bull was very calm. It was as if nothing happened. It wasn’t acting wild.”

The bull knocked Gonzalez out, but he regained consciousness and initially complained of shortness of breath, said Tracey Martinez, a San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman. Paramedics took him to a hospital.

Neighbors said Gonzalez worked in construction and had five children.

Gonzalez kept two cows and one bull in his backyard, officials said. Fontana is a rural area about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.
