A female corrections officer was held hostage by a male inmate for several hours before being released unharmed late Monday at a state prison in southern Arizona, a prison official said.

The officer was released at 10:38 p.m. local time, about six hours after being taken hostage by an armed inmate in his cell at a medium-security unit at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Tucson, said prison spokesman John Hallahan.

“The situation was peacefully resolved through negotiations,” Hallahan said, adding that he did not know the type of weapon used by the inmate.

The names of the inmate and the officer have not been released, he said.

The prison complex is about 10 miles south of Tucson, Arizona.
