A father jumped with his infant son into waters off Staten Island early Thursday, and while the man died a police officer rescued the boy.

A man stabbed his ex-girlfriend, then died after he jumped off a dock into the water with their 8-month-old son, police said.

The infant was saved by a police officer responding to the Thursday morning incident. The infant was floating on his back about 20 feet from the Staten Island shore, police said.

“It was crying. It was in distress,” said Officer Brian Sheehy.

The father, 32-year-old Charles Walker, was submerged for at least 10 minutes before he was pulled out of the water, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

The infant was listed in stable condition at the hospital, police said. The ex-girlfriend, who was not identified, also was in stable condition.

Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Wysokowski said the man had stabbed his ex-girlfriend before police found him at the dock.
