Flights at New York airports were briefly delayed Tuesday due to radar problems caused by a computer glitch that was resolved by late afternoon, air traffic officials told NBC News.
Authorities kept some planes grounded even after the issue was fixed but planned to resume normal service after traffic had cleared out. Sixty-minute delays were reported.
Incoming and outgoing planes at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York City and Newark International Airport across the Hudson River in New Jersey had been affected by the outage, NBC reported. Departure delays had lasted about 45 minutes.
The Federal Aviation Association earlier instituted a “second tier groundstop” for flights coming into the New York area, forcing East Coast flights and some in the Midwest to be held on the ground.
There was no word on what caused the computer glitch at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center.
The center monitors air traffic over New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and is based on Ronkonkoma, N.Y.
