Gunmen opened fire on Saturday on the funeral procession of an Al Arabiya correspondent killed while covering an attack on a Shiite shrine in Iraq, the Arab television station reported.

One person was killed and four others wounded, the station said.

It said Iraqi security forces escorting the funeral of journalist Atwar Bahjat in Iraq returned fire.

Interior Ministry sources were not immediately able to confirm the attack.

Bahjat, a well-known Iraqi television journalist, was killed with two members of her crew on Wednesday.

Iraq is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists and Iraqi reporters are often threatened or killed.

The bombing of the Shiite shrine in Samarra sparked reprisal attacks against Sunni mosques and led to the most serious sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
