A single-engine plane flying from North Carolina to Fredericksburg crashed while attempting to land at an airport about one hour south of Washington, D.C., killing all four aboard, an FAA spokeswoman said Thursday.
The plane left Wednesday night from Winton, N.C., and was cleared for approach at 11:30 p.m. at Stafford Regional Airport. A search was organized when it didn't land, said FAA spokeswoman Arlene Murray.
Searchers found the wreckage Thursday morning about 500 yards from the airport, Murray said.
The plane, a Lancair 400, was registered to Fredericksburg-based Homeowner Title LLC, Murray said.
Laura Brown, another FAA spokeswoman, said the aircraft was to land at Fredericksburg then requested a change to Stafford, north of Fredericksburg.
"It may have been the weather. We don't know," Brown said.
Heavy fog shrouded the airport late Wednesday and early Thursday, said Capt. T.D. O'Leary, a spokesman for the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. The plane was operating under flight rules typically used for inclement weather, Murray said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
