Heavy snowfall disrupted travel in northern Italy on Friday but Olympics organizers were not among those complaining.
Friday marked the second straight day of snow on the mountains that will host the Winter Olympics in two weeks. Gianni Poncet, the competition manager for skiing, said Thursday that 12-16 inches of snow were forecast over the next two days.
“We hope it’s like they say it is,” Poncet said.
Snow had not fallen on the Alpine zone since New Year’s Eve.
The International Ski Federation voiced concern earlier this month that there was not enough snow cover on the games’ ski courses. Organizers said the problem had been solved with artificial snow.
A major snowstorm would put everyone at ease, though.
It was also snowing in downtown Turin, which has been on smog alert lately due to a lack of precipitation.
The Turin Games run Feb. 10-26.
