Target recalled about 350,000 trunks Thursday after an 18-month-old girl suffered brain damage from being pinned between the lid and the rim of a trunk.
The lids of these woven rattan, abaca or banana leaf trunks can drop very quickly when released, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The hinges attaching the lids do not have locking mechanisms or other precautions to prevent them from opening and closing quickly, the agency said.
CPSC has received two reports of injuries when the lids on the recalled trunks closed on children. An 18-month-old girl reportedly suffered brain damage when a lid hit her in the back of the head and pinned her throat against the rim of the trunk, restricting her airflow.
The trunks were manufactured in China and the Philippines and sold at Target stores nationwide between February 2009 and April 2010 as well as on Target's website.
They can be returned for a full refund or replacement product at any Target store.
