The federal government says a Portland company is recalling nearly 40,000 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated by E. coli bacteria.

The Agriculture Department says the meat from SP Provisions was produced from April 8 through May 28, and sold at retail stores and distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Oregon and Washington state.

The department said Wednesday it had gotten no reports of illnesses. It said sampling by the Food Safety and Inspection Service turned up the problem.

The agency says the recall includes bags and patties under the Cascade Natural Beef and SP Provisions brands.
