MTV has announced its latest film from "MTV Docs," and it is "Transformation," which follows six transgender and gender non-conforming individuals from Los Angeles as they get makeovers from Madin Lopez.
Madin Lopez is a gender non-conforming hairstylist who created ProjectQ, an organization that helps young people develop skills and embrace their full identity through a combination of hair styling and mentoring. The film follows Madin as they join the Los Angeles LGBT Center to help six young people.
"I was compelled to be a part of this documentary because visibility is important, Lopez told NBC OUT over email, "This world is a scary place and sometimes the only escape we have is through visual media. I didn't see people like me on the screen when I was young. I just want to set up the next generation in such a way in which their voice is represented."
"Transformation" will explores the lives of the six individuals Madin helps, which allows the documentary to examined issues facing trans youth such as emerging gender identities, employment and homelessness.
"Viewers can expect to see real stories of trans youth in LA (not ‘reality TV.') It’s told in a way that is celebratory and provocative, while acknowledging the very hard road many trans people have to walk, Executive Producer Melissa Johnson told NBC OUT via email.
The film is part of the network's Transgender Awareness Week programming, which began on November 14 and runs until November 20.
"Transformation" is set to air Thursday, November 17, at 10 p.m on MTV.
