UPDATE: In December 2017, remains were found in a rural location in Wayne County, Illinois. A month later, they were identified as belonging to Megan. In October 2020, 24-year-old Brodey Murbarger was arrested for Megan’s murder. Murbarger denied any involvement. Two years after that, Murbarger went on trial. He was found guilty and in January 2023, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison. In October 2023, Megan’s story was featured in a full episode of Dateline, titled “The Note.”

On July 3rd, Megan Nichols disappeared from her home in Fairfield, Illinois.
That night, her mother, Kathy Jo Hutchcraft, discovered a note Megan had left behind telling her mother that she loved her, but would never be happy at home. She also left her cell phone, which had been wiped clean.

"Megan wouldn't do this, she wouldn't just leave," Hutchcraft told 14News, a local NBC affiliate.According to authorities, Megan, who was 15 when she was last seen, withdrew money from a local bank while on her bicycle prior to her disappearance. Despite being missing for over a month, however, there are no active leads.Megan is 5'6'' tall, and weighs 111 lbs.
