New Yorkers can get a subscription for their caffeine addiction — and for now, it’s free.
A startup and app called "CUPS" gives subscribers unlimited coffee or tea for $45 a month at dozens of independent coffee shops in Manhattan and around the boroughs. Considering analysts say coffee prices aren't cooling off, this could be a good investment for New Yorkers in need of a caffeine jolt.
The app is currently in "soft launch" mode on the Apple App Store and Google Play, said co-founder Gilad Rotem, at a few locations like like The Bean, Filicori Zecchini, and Dub Pies. Before the app goes fully caffeinated, the java is on CUPS.
Rotem said the app will fully launch around the end of next week. After that, users can buy packages for between 5 and 23 drinks, or get a monthly plans. Unlimited coffee or tea costs $45, and unlimited espresso drinks cost $85. Users are limited to one drink every half-hour.
Even after the last free drop is drained, the monthly subscription cost could turn out to be a good deal.
"You’re going to see high prices here for at least two years," said Mike Seery, a commodity trading consultant.
