"Glee" star Cory Monteith died of an overdose of heroin and alcohol, according to findings released Tuesday by the British Columbia Coroner's Service.
His death is believed to be accidental.
Monteith, 31, was found dead Saturday afternoon in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he had spent a week. When Monteith failed to check out on time, hotel staff went to his room around noon and found that the actor had passed away.
Monteith went out on Friday night with a male friend and two female friends but returned to his hotel room alone around 2:15 a.m., Vancouver police Constable Brian Montague said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon. Police interviewed Monteith's three companions and they were cooperative, he said.
"This was an overdose and a tragic accident," Montague said, adding that Monteith was alone when he died. Police believe the actor had been dead for several hours when he was found.
Foul play was ruled out because " there was nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary, no signs of struggle or robbery, and there was evidence in the room that was consistent with a drug overdose," Montague said. Investigators don't know who supplied the drugs and they won't be investigating the case any further, he added.
Montague declined to release more information about Monteith's whereabouts the day before he died, saying, "there's nothing to suggest that that has anything to do with our investigation."
Monteith was due to begin working on the fifth season of the Fox show in two weeks.
The actor has been open about his struggles with drug addiction, and said he went to rehab when he was 19 after his family intervened. Monteith checked himself into a rehab facility in March, and thanked his supporters on Twitter when he completed his treatment a month later.
Representatives for his "Glee" co-star and longtime girlfriend Lea Michele issued a statement on her behalf Tuesday afternoon:

Since Cory’s passing, Lea has been grieving alongside his family and making appropriate arrangements with them. They are supporting each other as they endure this profound loss together.
