Authorities say the death toll from the powerful June 24 earthquakes has climbed above 5,000 as recovery crews continue clearing debris.

An earthquake struck the southern Mexican Pacific coast on Friday, right on the border with Guatemala, and was felt from Mexico City to El Salvador.

More than 17,000 have been left homeless after the earthquakes. Survivors like 12-year-old Fabiana Blanco say they have been left with “a battle scar.”

International rescue teams continue searching collapsed apartment buildings and homes in the hardest-hit state, La Guaira, even as hopes of finding more survivors fade and the mission increasingly shifts toward recovery.

Local and international rescue teams raced against the clock to pull survivors from the rubble four days after two powerful earthquakes shook La Guaira.

The increasingly desperate search for survivors entered a third day, with at least 1,430 dead and more than 50,000 missing.

Two days after the quakes, 920 people had been confirmed dead and more than 3,000 others injured.

Nearly 1,000 are dead and more than 50,000 are still missing after the devastating twin earthquakes.

Three children were among those pulled to safety in a miraculous rescue in La Guaira that aired on state TV.
