Donald Trump promised a "big announcement" Friday on his beliefs about President Obama's birthplace. 

Asked on Fox Business Network whether he can say definitively that Obama was born in Hawaii, Trump said, "You watch my statement ... we have to keep the suspense going."

The birther issue -- which first catapulted Trump to the political stage -- resurfaced Thursday when the GOP nominee declined to say he believed Obama was an American. Trump's campaign later issued a statement saying the candidate believes the president was born in the U.S.

Trump teased that his announcement would come Friday morning.
