South Florida Spared as Hurricane Sweeps North
South Florida missed the worst of Hurricane Matthew, getting some gusty winds and a little rain as the storm brushed by early Friday.
"The good news, at least for now, is the core of the storm has stayed a little farther east of the shore," The Weather Channel's Michael Palmer said. "South Florida didn't see that significant weather. It's out of the woods now."
Palmer predicted the more significant impacts of Hurricane Matthew — including winds reaching 100 mph and a storm surge up to 11 feet — would be felt from Melbourne, Florida, up to Daytona Beach.
The storm was moving north at a relatively fast clip, Palmer added, likely bringing improved conditions to South Florida and the state's central coast by evening.
