Is Cagle's Delta fight boosting his gubernatorial bid?
Remember last week, when the Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia vowed to "kill any tax legislation that benefits Delta" unless the airline company reversed its decision to cut marketing ties with the NRA?
Well, a new poll shows that the controversial move may be paying off — at least in the short term — for Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who's running for governor in a competitive primary.
The poll, conducted on behalf of pro-Cagle group Citizens for Georgia’s Future, found that 57 percent of likely GOP voters agreed with Cagle's tweeted threat to retaliate against Delta, and his standing in the GOP primary jumped from 31 percent last month to 38 percent now. A majority — 65 percent — also said that they'd heard a lot or some about Cagle's response to the airline's decision.
What's more, the poll showed that 81 percent of Republican voters in the state gave the NRA a favorable rating, compared to 59 percent with a positive view of Delta, which is the state's top private employer and a major economic driver.
Six-in-ten GOP voters also said that major companies should not take a public stand on policy issues like gun legislation.
