Johnson, Stein Fail to Make First Presidential Debate

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Friday that the first two much-anticipated fall debates will include only the major party candidates for president and vice president.

The commission announced that while both the Libertarian ticket headed by Gary Johnson and the Green Party ticket topped by Jill Stein had fulfilled requirements of eligibility and having gained sufficient ballot access but have not met the threshold of reaching 15 percent in an average of national polls. The commission said the criteria "will be reapplied to all candidates in advance of the second and third presidential debates."

Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton will participate in the first debate taking place at Hofstra University on September 26. GOP vice presidential nominee will join his Democratic counterpart at one debate on October 4. The second presidential debate will be on October 9 and the final one on October 19.
